At the University of Goettingen he completed his PhD in Microbiology in 1980 in the laboratory of Gerhard Gottschalk and qualified as a post-doctoral lecturer (Habilitation) in 1988. In 1989 he was appointed to a professorship in Microbiology at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) where he has been the head of the Institute of Technical Microbiology since 1990. From 1993 to 1999 he coordinated two EU network projects on extremophiles (Biotechnology of Extremophiles and Extremophiles as Cell Factories) with 39 and 58 partners from academia and industry. From 2000 to 2008 Prof. Antranikian coordinated two national network projects on biocatalysis supported by the German Environmental Foundation (DBU). He was the coordinator of the initiatives  “Biokatalyse” with 60 partners and “InnovationsCentrum Biokatalyse ICBio”  with 80 partners. From 2007 to 2015 he was the coordinator of the two network projects “Biocatalysis2021” and "Biorefinery2021" including more than 50 partners and supported by the Ministry of  Education and Research (BMBF).

He was president of the International Society for Extremophiles (2004-2010) and is chief editor of the international scientific journal Extremophiles since 2008.
